About the Dana Point Bluff Top Trail: Coastal Views & A Little History Lesson
What initially drew me in to visit the Dana Point Bluff Top Trail was the panoramic views and quaint familiarity of New England style homes along the cliff boardwalk. Once we were there, I was pleasantly surprised to find plaques filled with nuggets of historical context along the trail.
The most notable fact from the walk? It’s the one about the iconic arches you’ll see in the middle of the trail. The arches are remnants of a 1920’s S.H. Woodruff shuttered project, the Dana Point Inn. These arches are actually the framework for bay windows! If you look from the bridge, you will also see an old rock pathway (now closed off) that crosses the canyon.

The Dana Point Bluff Top trail is a leisurely 0.2 mile stroll that can easily be finished under 20 minutes. It follows the cliffs’ natural U-shaped edges, where the stairs go downward, across and upward again. Stop for gorgeous photos of the Dana Point Harbor, the cliffside flora and beautiful architecture.
Fun Fact: Once you arrive on the “bridge” part of the trail, you are actually standing atop of the Dana Point Waterfall. This is a totally manmade waterfall that only comes to life when there is heavy rainfall. The runoff water from a pipe creates the “waterfall.” It is kinda gross but something to check off, since it is a rare occurrence.

Getting here and parking was relatively easy. We parked in the Street of Amber Lantern, where the trail starts with a life-size statue of The Hide Drougher tossing cow hide down the cliff for trade. There is also street parking available on the other side of the trail on the Street of Violet Lantern.
Be sure to check for street cleaning times! Last time I checked, it was Wednesdays from 8-10am in the mornings. If you’re planning on coming during busier hours, like golden hour or sunset, plan for more crowds and less parking spots open.

Once you’ve reached the end of the Dana Point Buff Top Trail, you can extend the scenic walk into Heritage Park. It is another block down on the Street of Golden Lantern. The views are great and there is even more space to sit down or even have a quick picnic, overlooking the Dana Point Harbor.
Walking and hiking coastal trails has been my favorite thing to do in SoCal, and this one is currently in my Top 3, so far. Dana Point is such a charming city. This trail is quite a highlight and if you’re around town during the holidays, they have a great installation at the harbor. Oh, and yes, I’ve been to the Dana Point Waterfall, too! Expect mud. I will save that for another blog post.
